The Yellow Wallpaper
This book cover is for the short story The Yellow Wallpaper. This is one of my favorite stories, it's so eerie and really plays with ones mind. It brings light to the role of woman during the 19th century as well as mental illness. The story is about a woman who essentially goes crazy while being confined to this room with a hideous yellow wallpaper. She begins seeing a woman crawling behind this paper and in the end believes that she is the one behind the wallpaper and needs to get out.
The idea behind this illustration was to personify the wallpaper and give it life just as the main character did in the story. It is pulling this woman in and encompassing her illustrating not only mental disease but also what the main character truly believes is happening to her.
The typeface was chosen in order to compliment the pattern of the paper as well as allude to the type used during that era. I chose a pale yellow in order to not overpower the illustration but also make it standout from the background.
